I took a short look at the map and it is heavily unbalanced. Though I like the idea of smaller european states it should have some aspect of balancing and reality. I will give you some brief examples on the German states.

Schleswig Holstein:
Kiel 1 (!) Unit 240,000 population
Lübeck 5 Units 210,000 population

Why does Kiel only hold one Unit, despite being the Headquater of the German Baltic fleet, while Lübeck holds 5 Units though it got less population?

Bavaria:
Augsburg 1 UNIT(!) 270,000 population
Würzburg 5 Units 140,000 population
Nürnberg 5 Units 500,000 population
Regensburg 5 Units 140,000 population
Munich 8 Units 1,3 million population

Your balancing is totally out of scale there.

Now for the best part,

Brandenburg:
Berlin 8 Units 3,5 million population
Potsdam 8 Units 160,000 population
Schwedt 8 UNITS 30,000 population
Luckenwalde 8 UNITS 20,000 population

This repeats all over the map, on every country.

Let's see how the biggest German cities are rated:

Berlin 3,5 mil 8 Units
Hamburg 1,8 mil 8 Units
Munich 1,3 mil 8 Units
Cologne 1,0 mil 8 Units
Frankfurt 680,000 8 Units
Stuttgart 600,000 8 Units
Düsseldorf 600,000 8 Units
Dortmund 580,000 8 Units
Essen 575,000 Not on the map
Bremen 550,000 6 Units

I think you see the scale doesn't work out here either. The map editor recommends 1 Unit per 350,000 population.

All in all I would give a + for the idea, but that's it. A "few" borders and unbalanced cities don't make a good map.

Realism is not a big criteria for utah's map... It's about overall completion.
If you are that bothered about the imbalance and want to stick to realism, you might want to take a look at Scaled-MEGAGERMANY
This is REALITY...
(Sorry about this post utah...)

This would take many hours to finish. Also, the cities are far, far too close together. You should be working at a much higher resolution so there is a greater gap between them.

It's more of a tech demo than a map.

"This would take hours to finish" "You should be working at a much higher resolution so there is a greater gap between them." Would that not make games even longer?
