AVG and Norton are horrendous, avoid them for your own good. Professionals recommend Avira and BitDefender amongst the free ones. Karpesky has always been either the best of the lot in detection rates or amongst the cream of the crop in general, but I don't really see the point in shelling out money for an anti-virus unless you're a Scene member or something (if you don't know what that is that's okay). Microsoft Security Essentials is also decent, judging from the summary report itself. There's your answer then Fallen Symantec sucks at its own game... stay clear of Norton Anti-Virus (Norton Commander and Ghost were awesome though, good times man).

The right anti virus software depends what you are doing. if you want for example an excellent security you should use kaspersky or norton. but if you are someone who plays a lot and needs therefore a fast software you should use microsoft essentials or antivir. i use essentials and it works fine for me. it does not slow down my system, which is very important for me.

Microsoft Security Essentials has about 2x the memory use of AntiVir. And AntiVir has way better detection rates. Link to the free version. I actually don't even have one. But that's mainly because my computer sucks, and Afterwind (yes, Afterwind) lags even without an antivirus running in the background. There's no need to be worried, anyway. Just use the computer reasonably. Avoid going on Google Images too much lest that "you've got a virus" sign comes up in those fake sites that try to make you believe your computer is being scanned (in fact, viruses are being downloaded to it). Only go to trusted porn sites, if you're into that stuff. Avoid illegal downloads and the like, especially from RapidShare. Torrents are somewhat safer due to their peer-to-peer nature but they can still be very unsafe. Again, only popular sites. And yes, mods, people do these things and then catch viruses and cry about it. Chances are you've done these things too. I'm not promoting them, I'm actually warding people off of them. 95% of security problems come from users' idiocy. Like Android users who ignore the warnings when Market tells them the apps they're downloading have goddamn root access. Still, you probably should have an antivirus running unless you clearly know what you're doing. Let there be no measure of fear.
Dude, Norton is a joke. Its detection rates are worse than those of bloody MS Security Essentials. Look at http://av-comparatives.org. They make fresh tests every few months, but the 2011 Summary Report would probably be a better indicator. Anyway, don't use Norton. It has bad detection rates, it's made for idiots with its stupid interface trying to hide all the options and it consumes ridiculous amounts of your computer's precious memory. Do not want.

If you configure norton correctly then it is an really good anti virus program, but if you have no clue how to configure it. then you should not use it. i used norton some time ago and it blocked great.

Have you any clue what "detection rates" mean? It means that some viruses don't get caught. Unfortunately, Norton's detection rates are pretty low compared to rivals. Which means you might have just got a virus and wouldn't have a clue. Configuration doesn't matter; it just doesn't catch them. So it didn't "block great"; with most malware you just wouldn't know. Don't use Norton, look at the (VERY trustworthy and independent) source I provided and wisen up foo!

AV-Comparatives doesn't look at Trojans in particular--very few tests look at sectors of malware. They look at how the programs protect the users. They look at features and grade each anti-virus accordingly on features such as pro-active on-demand protection, false positive detection and several others. (all the following information is based on the 2011 summary report by av-comparatives.org) All-around product of the year:
On-Demand Malware Protection winners:
Proactive On-Demand Detection winners:
False Positives winners:
On-Demand Scanning Speed winners:
Malware Removal winners:
Whole-Product Dynamic Protection winners:

Or use Linux, because Macs can actually get viruses quite easily. Linux due to its open-source nature can provide zero-day patches on vulnerabilities, that is fix them on the very day they come up and have the systems updated. The only problem with Linux? You can't play AW on it ;____; Talking of open-source, methinks Ivan has used a few icons from the Oxygen icons project (for the KDE desktop) on the website! That's okay of course, but doesn't it need to be attributed?

The best free anti-virus is Avast, doesn't slow your computer much, works effectively, etc. Maybe French people don't know how to fight wars properly, but they do know how to produce good software.
