Maybe you have multiple tabs or browsers open under the games/options tab.

Or Google Chrome pretending to be offline, then when you think its safe to 'abuse' global, getting muted by him...

Also a bit of fake-afk-definition.

I always have multiple tabs open ... lol. K - well aren't i learning all kinds of trivia this week ♥

Whichever tab you logged on with will mark you afk. So if you log on in one tab then play in the other and the first goes afk you will appear afk.

One question: does marking myself in a casual game help extend the period before I am disconnected from the server?

There is no such time variable disconnecting you from the server. It's just a connection error afaik.
