The Final Game

This will be the very last game of SL. An epic feat possibly unparalleled in the world of AW. 19 of the most notable players (hopefully including Ivan and Amok) will be playing in a huge world game. Amok promised to try to make it special, but he's constrained by time, so even if no admin hax happens it will still be an amazing final game. Votes will be taken on the settings of this world game soon.

The game will be a world 5k FFA either 3 or 4 minute turn time.

Participants:
1. Brianwl (13): #1 ranked player in the world, former leader of VS, leader of IV, and a very helpful and nice mod and member of the community.
2. Mauzer Panteri (13): #2 ranked player in the world, and leader of a long time competitive clan (MK) that has went above and beyond what anyone would've thought.
3. Acquiesce (13): An old veteran in AW, former moderator, leader of a clan that pushed the AW competitive further and further to become what it is today. (Illyria)

Worst game ever.

Sorry for you dying so soon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So thank you all for participating in this wonderful, random, and disastrous day. Not everything going to plan is the least to say, and the final game wasn't perfect, but that doesn't matter. What matters was we as a community were able to celebrate the end of an era and the dawn of a new one. I'd like to thank every single person who participated in organizing, playing, and PR spamming me in all the events and throughout the day.

A special thanks goes to Dbacks, who skipped work to be here today, who helped with inviting players (such as bringing Tesla from the death), and who hosted the very final game of silverlight for me because of some randomness that has happened.

Further thanks goes to Powderkeg for trying to host the WW2 and almost getting there haha. I'd like to shout-out my clan the best clan in the world for always being up for joining events and being consultants and advisors to me through organizing this all. SM4lyfe.

Last but not least i'd like to thank the admins for blessing us with such a wonderful game and saving it from death when they undertook this tiresome and work-intensive move of switching to HTML5. Thank you Ivan and Amok, thank you.

Love you all (except the noobs who left the final game of sl [THATS YOU XEENOSAPIEN]) bai

EDIT: SS of everything coming soon!

I've got to say I'm a bit disappointed at how the casual game aspect of this the event is going about. First of all, what Amok seemed to have been intending when he said that games made before October 7th will be allowed to finish, was in order to allow existing casual games to finish and not abruptly halted. I don't think it was at all intended for people to create as many games as possible in the casual lobby the day Silverlight was to to be decommissioned.

From what I gather the admins intention is to take down the Silverlight servers. However as The Tachtition's post indicates, a 48 hour turn based game with a 500 turn limit could last years if unobstructed. Cramming in as many casual games as possible on October 7th and even some which may prolong the life of the servers later than expected is a disservice to the game.

Additionally the new casual games flooding the Silverlight lobby were created very short-sightedly. For many people not used to the dynamics of casual games, they may find it very difficult to keep up with turns from so many different games. Its an inopportune time to become a first-time casual player and join in excess of 10 games. The games are also lacking in variety of settings with most limiting alliances to one or two at maximum. Now number of alliances are certainly a matter of personal preference however however as an ostensible grand ending to the age of Silverlight it seems not inclusive and unaccommodating to users such as myself who would prefer to have more alliances.

In short I think it was a bad idea to use casual games as a way to squeeze the most time possible out of Silverlight at a time when it should be in the process of being discommissioned. Casual games are fun, but we should be joining then in the HTML lobby, not to make Silverlight drag on.

What I suggest as a solution to the casual games problem is to determine the games winners by SP within 10 turns or another set number for all casual Silverlight lobby. I will message Amok and explain this suggestion tommorow when I have the time.

I'm suspecting a bit of a language barrier by how you used the word objective. Let me then be clear.

Part of it is my opinion, that the games were very short sighted. Other point is that they are harmful, in that they were made for the purpose if necessitating support for Silverlight even longer. I will ficus on that only this post.

I sampled a few of the games and found that they all have a maximum of 500 turns. 500 turns, at 48 hours is entirely unreasonable and I think even immature. Some people must think it's good idea to force the hand of the admins to keep Silverlight servers for over two more years. Wasn't it announced Silverlight was to be dropped because the burden of maintaining servers for both HTML5 and Silverlight was too costly, both in man hours and in the price of hosting? That is why I think these "final sl" games are an absurd waste and there needs to be some fixed way off winding down the remaining SL games besides allowing 10 or 11 500 turn game to run their course.

You're correct in what you're saying. We do indeed want to get rid of the old server as soon as possible, even though we'd still need keep it up for map & scenario editing). Would probably have to impose some sort of deadline by which all the running games would need to be finished (say, 1 or 2 months).

I can name many reasons about why trying to extend SL with those games won't work. Based on those reasons I would classify those games as a waste of time as you've said, but also nothing to worry about since they will fail as soon as they are played.

If it is show that they made those games on purpose, to keep running them forever (as you're suggesting) then moderators can take actions against them (Rule 1.1). But there can be some games that were made with legit reasons, hence why I think is better to not take actions for now. Setting a deadline or lowering all the games turn to certain amount of time is also a good idea.

What do you expect? For people to let go of Silverlight and move to the (still being developed I get that) but ugly HTML5 without actually prolonging their SL experience for as long as possible? Get real. The games were obviously made to play SL as long as possible, and of course admins will take action when necessary. I don't get how people think trying to play the beloved old version for as much as they possibly can is childish when its an option available to them (options can be abused ). Having said that the spam is probably too much for the servers and some action should be taken.

These are my suggestions for the best solutions:
1. Remove all games with less than 10 players (turn 1-49), less than 6-10 players (turn 1-99), less than 4-6 players (turn 100-199). Also set all 48 hour turns to 24 if its really necessary.
2. All games become 12 hour turns.
3. Remove games with less than 10 players. (SP divided between remaining players)
4. Make DC'ing from inactivity for SL 2 turns instead of 3, no total annihilation games or capture whole player country.

Screenshots for the final day of SL will be uploaded!

What do you expect? For people to let go of Silverlight and move to the [HTML5] without actually prolonging their SL experience for as long as possible?

Yes.

And HTML5 is pretty. You gotta get used to it like I've begun too, or provide productive feedback to the appropriate threads and submit bug reports. I think a whole bunch of HTML5 casual games set to last forever would be more productive and lead to people being more used to the new version.

Right now the main lobby is an embarrassment compared to the beginners one. I checked the numbers for this post: 10 in the main lobby and 32 in the beginners. I believe more often than not the people clinging to SL haven't given HTML5 enough time.

[quote author=379814

Oh my. I was hoping that wasn't the case. You know, making games so they can last forever. How long do you want them to go on?

You say an admin can intervene if they wanted. Okay, that's irrelevant and the same as saying that if an action does not have an explicit prohibition, doing it is de jure justified. In other words, hardly a reason for or against anything. I'll turn it around to demonstrate: an admin or mod could intervene and therefore you should not have taken a course of action.

I can say removing games just based on the player count or victory conditions is a bad idea. It will screw me over at least, from the culmination of some fun and interesting games (though I will be proposing in all of them to switch to 12 hours). I know those were only suggestions. Personally I think: encourage people to switch to 12 hour turns and give a deadline of a fixed date for when SL games won't be hosted. When the day is reached, you will get the "winner will be determined by SP in 5 turns message." By then users will have had the chance to hasten their games using 12 hour turns or agreeing to an alliance or whatever.

I agree with clovis, that actions should not be taken now, and I'd like to clarify that I don't think the intention is to make a game that will last forever but rather that they could extend SL support for no good reason. And that they don't make a good culmination to SL (10 total annihilation games with 1 ally or total annihilation, oh boy oh boy).

I screwed up the quote tags pretty bad. Apparently you can only quote once per post so I edited out some brackets so it doesn't look all screwy with everything nested.

brianwl made many of those "final" games. Darkmace also made several of those games... considering brianwl is a mature (and probably the most loved) moderator and Darkmace is one of the top supporters of HTML and a great bug reporter, I would commit the fallacy and say that both of them have good intentions by hosting those games.

Now that you know who are the two principal hosts of that "spam" of games, I bet you would think again before saying they made those games to make SL live longer. I will quote them, maybe they care enough to give a public explanation, but this topic doesn't really belong to public discussion but to mods.

The problem with mods is that they aren't even dealing with the multiple threads abuse, so I really doubt they do anything with this anyway (inb4, comment deleted since pulse consider this a bash).
