I feel like there has never been a dicussion for this, but many people probably wonder, why do new clans fail? And what does it take for a new clan to strive?

Many people want to make a clan for a few reasons here are the main ones in my opinion
1.) Want there name on something
2.) Building a legacy
3.) For a group of friends
4.) Map making

Arguably many more categories but this is what I think. Not many clans in this era lets say 2013 until now have actually made it.

The reason why I think a clan fails is over clan wars, obvious but the truth. When a clan war is lost many people like to blame eachother which cause unrest in a clan. Or some times egos can clash. Many clans died early on in the begginning heres a few; Bactria, American Pie Titans, Praetorian Clans , Immortal Spartans, Doomsday, The Outsiders, Pars, Alpha Omega. These are all new clans that couldn't make it past the first month. Some other clans that have died but showed potential are State of Mind and Killa Instinct.

The question is why? Why did these clans fail? Many of these founders of these clans were very excited to start something and it failed? Was it the lack of recruitment? I think it has to do with veterans not wanting to join their clans and the unwillingness to train someone. The only way you can be successful is by giving others a shot. For example, Syndicate was a major player in most of these clans today. Syndicate was basically the breeding ground of most people, myself included. Syndicate does things not many clans do which is give players a shot, maybe not as much today since Spart is inactive.

By complaining how this community does not have enough competitive clans is partially everyones fault, for not wanting to train new players. These new players could go out and make a clan like I did. It leads back to my point about clans failing because of not wanting to train lower ranks or give them a chance.

Another thing I see is clan hopping, many notable players are bouncing from clan to clan and not being able to find a spot. Losing a big name in your clan is never a good thing and it hurts a clans confidence moving forward. One of my reccomendations is not letting in any of these clan hoppers unless they are for real about wanting to stay and join. Un loyal members kill clans.. Thats why clans like Stalins, Syndicate, Illyria, MK, evoL and others are here. All of them have a group of core players who are loyal to one another.

I'm just trying to give people tips if they are looking to make a new clan that wont fail, clans are scarce already and I'd like to see some more, but i'd also like to hear your guys opinion on why new clans fail.

Clans fail because of bad leadership. A good leader(s)-
  • Provides a clear direction. He makes the goals of the clan plain to each member. By establishing clear expectations there is less confusion and drama later. For e.g- in Rockstar! (formerly known as Illyria) everyone knows the objective is to CW and socialize. Other clans have different objectives (trolling, mapmaking, training, finding people from your country, whatever).
  • Resolves conflicts. Fighting is inevitable. Within your clan there will be subdivisions and there will be problems. Solves them with damage control.
  • Makes arrangements for new members to be welcomed, assimilated, and trained if necessary. A good leader knows each individual player within the clan personally.
  • Recognizes and deals with problem players. One whiny punk can ruin an entire clan's atmosphere, I've seen it happen. Those who don't make an effort to be friendly and get to know the others, they get the boot.
  • Knows something about the game. If you want your clan to be competitive and you are a noob it will likely fail.
  • Establishes some sort of clan culture. Members know what to expect from one another in the clan. This is the most important thing in the long run. Eventually a clan practically leads itself. The rocky part is in the beginning but if you can get over that hump players get used to each other's company and it's GG.

I've been in a half dozen clans and personally led 3. And I've seen all the important ones come and go, from Semper Fi to The Avengers. This is just what I've learned by observing. Most clans that don't last very long die because their leader(s) goes inactive (The Avengers, State of Mind) or because their leader(s) is just grossly incompetent to begin with (I won't name these). Frankly, what makes or breaks a clan in this game are the very same principles that apply to all groups in life.

Note: The best clans don't have one good leader but 3+. And I don't mean leader as in the AW leader/officer promotion system. I mean someone who works at making the clan succeed, regardless of title.

Well, I have to say I agree with most said here.
In beggining and making clan period, I would mark as main problem thing that some players want their name on something, especially lower ranks (7,8) who got potential to become top players on aw.
    Why?
They see how main 5 clan works and want to do same.
They think (I dont blame them, that toughts even I had), that is just make clan, think of its name and players will join by themselves.
I agree, begginners will, but competitive players for clan wars wont join some new clan that easy (also discutabile theme)
That is big fallacy of most clan founders.
For example, Tirpitz or Godofwar (i dont remember which one) said once to me they tought it wont be that hard to recruit competitive players. They did great effort there and made competitive clan in this season. We will see how it will work in future, I wish them luck. But as you mentioned, there are lots of clans which didnt survive as ENIGMA and died in less than month or two.

Also, some blessed guy posted once comment that said like this:
'In sumary there are only few clans who are making aw history and can compete with each other. Those were: Dalmati and EmpireSRB and those are now: Illy, MK, SM, Syndi and I would add evoL and Cosa Nostra, others are attempts which just die.'
By this, I want to stay more on evoL and Cosa Nostra. Lets put on a side individual toughts for each and look on things objectively.
evoL and now Cosa Nostra are only clans that prooved they can deal with 'main' 4 clans. They all have ups and downs, evoL had, Cosa had, 'main' 4 also had. But they are still existing and writing AW cw history.

How they still exist even there were many falls and downs?
    - Core team!
Because if you have few champs who are supporting each other in best and in worst. Trying together to find solutions for mistakes and ways for better.
evoL had big bad period last season, they finished as 4th.
SM got big bad period in this season, but I believe they will get back where they belong.

I get through everything with evoL and I can say (put on a side our argues) I was made there from noob to a competitive player. I remeber all falls and ups, but I would like to say more about how things works in my current clan and how it became this strong and fun clan for all.
(This can be tip for all players who wants to make own clan)

    - I was with Ferlucci, Sun Tzu and Diabolik Rolex in KILLA. It was really messy there about ranks and members because clan had more than 50 players and it is not easy to controll all, especially when most of them are begginers. We were doing 2 things:
    - Teaching them
    - Trying to compete in CWs but that was really hard to catch each other so we used and played much lower ranks (alts not counting)

I made best relationship with Ferlucci, we were chatting even about many private things, about game, work, college, family, all, meeting and going out xd, just all. And I remember said to him once: 'Wherever you go in aw, whatever you do here, im with you'

He teached me many things, also I will never forget his supports on chats in my duels: go croat go, and others xd..

In ending of season, we had a conversation and decided to raise Cosa again, but not only for a season.... for all times.
panteri and opi were already waiting there and me, Ferr, Sun and Rolex joined.
After that Zone came, riddler, Klevis, Dizabo and all others (im sorry if I didnt mention someone, its too late to think here in Croatia)
Also, we recruited few lower ranks and thats it, we are now where we are with little less than 100 cw's in 20 days.
But most important for surviving is (in my opinion) - Loyal buddies and squad.
Relationship is thing that keeps you on, helping to each, having fun, talking..... we often forgot this is damn game, this is something where we find virtual or maybe real friends and to have fucking fun.
I went too far away again, but in conclusion, this.is my suggestion:
To make your clan survive - have at least 4-5 great loyal (to the death) buddies and other will flow by its own.

    Ty, Cro

Very true, I have not seen a single good clan that is a 1 person leadership

Mix styles in leadership personnel, my advise for new clans if you are noobish and want to be competitive don't worry about the early losses, challenge yourself, and for clans with 'established' players starting again invite a mid rank and chuck them into cws don't worry about losses, the experience for them is invaluable and this is how you create an organic feel, usually players given an opportunity will stick around. Bert Dbacks Fock Stryko good examples of this in SM. Finally the biggest mistake for new clans is inviting too many people, 20 max (top max) otherwise the clan becomes chaotic.

All the loyal clans with cores started with losses, Evol, Syndi, SM even MK only Illy the exception but you guys started with some competent players.

There is a difference between Cosa/Enigma and other new clans, being that the core members come from another clan together, so in that sense the clan already has its core established (ala Illy - syndi) That is why they will have a chance to survive.

Dont be discouraged though, successful clans can be done organically, I would put Syndi SM MK Evol originals on that list ( I mean fuck our highest rank when I started was r6 xa)

Dalmati was, and I believe is still one of the best clans today. Due to changes on aw, alot of people went inactive. Myself I was a member there, before I decided to go somewhere else, but that is a another story. I wont hide the fact, that their set of rules, and environment is what breeded new players joining Dalmati, to become top players.
Anyway Dalmati's leader Caulerpa is still the leader, and I believe most of what Meester ( or "Acquise" sorry for the wrong spelling ) said.

Yeah acqui is very right, as always. The leader/s sets the tone in the beggining and the start of a new clan is the most importand part. When we are talking about competitive clans, the leader/s got to have some basic characteristics.

    a. being experienced - Being experienced and pro in the game means alot and a reputation as a good player, goes a long way, when trying to recruit competitive players.
b.connections - Being social and knowing people is also importand. The more "famous" you are in the game and the more connections you have, wether is friends or just knowing people, is also importand factor when it comes to recruiting solid players.

If you do not have those qualities, i cant see how you would expect competitive players to join your clan.Thats the reality of the matter.

But having these, for starters, is a good way to secure a solid team of competent players for your new clan. After that you have to establish a core of loyal players and a clan culture as acqui said.If you cant do that, your clan will fail.Thats why so many clans with a bunch of pro competitive players, have failed in the past. The clan needs to have a character and the members to go with its flow. The core players usually set the tone for this and so its importand all the new recruits are a good match, not only as players but as character as well.
I m gonna give some examples of my lovely clan so you understand what i mean.

-has a great family-like atmosphere, we play for the clan and not ourselfs and we love-never compete with each other. So players with big egos like Mr_own_U , attention whores (too many to post) , non-team players like Syrian and panteri23, or clan haters (sorry chill) are bound to not be a good match.

-We joke, mock, tease and troll each other all the time.Players without a sense of humour or people who get shocked and offended easily, will not have a good time in Illyria.Needless to say that this means 2/3 of atwar will not be a good match for this clan.

-We have a high IQ average and we think alot.Stupid people, with low intelligence, close minded, racists-facists, religious fanatics and all other tards will never fit in Illyria and didnt, in the past.Another 2/3 of atwar not a good match here also.

-Driving force is to play as much cws as possible, get the best results possible and have some fun.Players that winning and establishing a name for themselves is their driving force, will also not be a good match eventually, like it happened with Zone and others, in the past.Nothing wrong with it, just a difference in priorities.

Also no matter how skilled a player is, if he is not a fun personality, has a good character with some morals and likes to socialize, he will also be a bad match. So boring personalities, like Chess for example, players who never speak and cant move their fat fingers to write a "hello" and instead write "h" in clan chat (h mauzer), players with questionable morals ( hi cthulhu ) or evil demons like Mr_Own_U, will never fit in Illy, no matter how much of good players they are.

So, what im saying with all this, is that if the leaders make up their clans personality and character, they can recruit players that fit in and this will go along way to make a solid, loyal core that will stick around. If you have the core, your clan is succesfull imo. Each clan can have its own characteristics and values, not all have to be the same.I was a bad match for MK for example and looking at it now its clear what i wanted from a clan and what MK wanted from its players are 2 different things, whereas in Illyria i found a great home , in which i could be myself. That doesnt mean MK is not succesfull, it has its own character and its own core players.Im pretty sure all succesfull clans are like this, including evol.

Lastly if you skip the gay romance of croat with ferluci, its clear Croat is on to something.Being friends with your clan buddies and having fun outside of games is a huge factor and maybe the most importand in my opinion, if you want your clan to stick around.
I had my doubts and still have some, about coza, because i see alot of different personalities in there, i sincerely hope Croat is right and you guys will still be around next season, cause Godess know, you are trying..You have Serbians,Turks and Albanians playing side to side for fuck shake, you deserve it.go coza go

Good question MOU... my observations point to one single unifying factor underlying all the other reasons you gave... and you mentioned it....

    ego...

When a good clan does get together, they work with one another for the good of the clan... when ego creeps in though, self interests over-take the constructive efforts...

What meester says about leadership is also bang-on, and you'll note that in each case, the leader is managing ego's, either directly or indirectly.

Unfortunately, there sometimes seems to be a correlation between ego and 'skill' as big egos need to but a lot of energy into feeding them, and naturally, all this energy results in superior / dominant players...
